Through this project, I have really been able to gain a deeper perspective from these two characters. For a long time I perceived Buttercup as a shallow, self absorbed, selfish, and unintelligent damsel in distress, who was simply waiting for someone to rescue her at all times. Through this project, I have found many cases in which this was true, but I have also seen some cases where she does attempt to do things herself. One example of this is when she jumps out of the boat and tries to swim away after being kidnapped, granted this was not the best idea, but it was an attempt at saving herself. She realizes that there is more to herself than her beauty, and tries to get other people to realize that as well. In Westley, we see a person who goes from Farm Boy, to Westley, to the Dread Pirate Roberts, to the Man in Black, to Westley again. It is really very strange to see how differently the farm boy and the man in black act. Through this project, I’ve been able to put some better reasoning behind why the characters seem so different. I’ve realized, that when he was the farm boy, he acted purely out of love for Buttercup. Whereas, when he is the man in black, he is acting out of heartbreak, spite, and feelings of betrayal. These characters really do act very differently in different situations, and seem to lack consistency. I believe that this was used as a satirical device by Goldman. We can apply this to our lives, it seems to be very common to see people whose personality seems to change so easily due to situation or who they’re with. It was very interesting to be able to get to know these characters better through this project.
